Dr Dáire Shanahan is a dual-qualified consultant in oral medicine, providing specialist assessment and medical management of complex oral and orofacial conditions.
He graduated in dentistry from Trinity College Dublin and subsequently in medicine, and completed higher specialist training in Oral Medicine at the University of Bristol Dental Hospital. He holds Fellowship in Dental Surgery (Oral Medicine) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, providing full specialist accreditation, and completed a PhD in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Bristol.
Dr Shanahan holds consultant and senior lecturer appointments in Oral Medicine at Bristol Dental Hospital and the University of Bristol. His clinical practice focuses on the diagnosis and management of inflammatory and autoimmune oral mucosal disease, chronic oral and facial pain, salivary gland disorders, and oral manifestations of systemic disease.
Alongside his clinical work, he is actively involved in research and postgraduate education in Oral Medicine, and works closely with medical and surgical colleagues in the care of medically complex patients.
In addition to his NHS and academic roles, Dr Shanahan provides a private oral medicine referral service at Burlington Dental Clinic. He works closely with referring dentists and medical colleagues, with an emphasis on careful assessment, clear communication, and practical, evidence-based management.
